Canvas Export Goes Blank After Resizing? Even the Same Width Resets It
Setting canvas width after drawing can clear both the bitmap and drawing state. Trace the assignment order before blaming the source image or encoding quality.

An image previews correctly, yet the exported file is blank or transparent. If canvas width was assigned during the workflow, inspect ordering before blaming damaged art or low encoding quality. This is an integration checklist, not a report of the same defect in Tooliva's current tools.
Width assignment is not a harmless layout update
The MDN width reference explains that assignment clears the backing bitmap and resets the rendering context to defaults, including the current path, fillStyle and globalCompositeOperation. This happens even when the new width equals the existing value.
An unchanged numeric width therefore does not establish preserved pixels or state. Restoring a color property does not redraw the previous image. CSS display width and canvas bitmap dimensions need separate checks; repeatedly assigning bitmap dimensions just to alter page layout can reset content.
Write down the actual sequence
Compare these conceptual paths against the asynchronous loading, reactive updates and export logic actually used:
- Content-loss path: load image → draw → assign width → export immediately.
- Auditable path: establish dimensions → configure required drawing state → wait for valid source input → draw → export and inspect.
The second path is not drop-in code for every integration. A later size change still requires the relevant state and content to be restored. When an image-load callback and a size observer trigger each other, record every assignment's time and caller instead of checking only the final dimensions.
Keep source data, then verify the redraw
- Retain source images, target dimensions and required drawing settings; do not keep the only source inside the current canvas.
- Locate the final dimension assignment relative to drawing, including assignments that repeat the same value.
- Redraw at final dimensions in a controlled copy, checking transparency, compositing and the intended region.
- Read the exported file and inspect dimensions, alpha and appearance; a file existing with the expected name does not prove correct content.
For delivery dimensions, use the separate pixel-dimensions and DPI checklist. Increasing a DPI label does not recover cleared pixels.
Keep other export failures distinct
An actual SecurityError calls for the cross-origin canvas checklist. When content disappeared after a size assignment, lowering quality or changing an extension does not recreate it. Preserve separate evidence for CORS permission, encoding and redraw order.
The Resource Compression tool's normal file workflow can prepare a comparison copy, but does not prove the original canvas path is repaired. This article uses documentation and sequence analysis, not a browser canvas experiment, and does not claim width assignment explains every blank export.
